~ Cafes, cold brew and one of the best beverage scenes in the country came together for a great weekend Caffeine Crawling through Portland, Oregon. ~ Exploring the thriving coffee scene of Portland on a Caffeine Crawl is always a great time, but this year's event was taken up a notch with a Cold Brew Competition hosted by Groundwork Coffee, The LAB and Barista Magazine. Public Domain Coffee took first place for Traditional Coffee Cold Brew, with Nossa Familia Coffee winning Best Bottled / Canned Cold Brew, and Prana Chai taking the title for Best Signature Drink (a delicious chai cider) and the Fan Favorite win. Attendees sipped their way through the lineup before relaxing with a Stumptown Cold Brew IPA from Rogue Ales & Spirits! In addition to taking home the title for Best Cold Brew Tea at the Cold Brew Competition, The Jasmine Pearl served up samples of several new tea offerings and house made Pearl Soda Co. tea sodas for Crawlers. Portland Roasting Coffee took us on a full tour of their roastery and sampled holiday blend brews while answering questions on their environmentally friendly roasting practices. Crawlers got their chocolate fix with luscious drinking chocolate at Alma Chocolate, and an amazing bean to bar chocolate tasting of 5 different single origin bars at Cacao. We enjoyed tasty coffee offerings and Q&A at The Arbor Lodge, and Caffe Vita provided a Chemex brew demo and take home bags of their house espresso Del Sol blend and a new Kenyan single origin offering. We enjoyed a brew demonstration of Ethiopian and Costa Rican coffees using a French Press and the Kalita Wave at Case Study Coffee, and a sneak peek of Coava Coffee's new Chemex filter while sipping Kenya and Honduras brews. Courier Coffee Roasters served up macchiatos, and Cup & Bar sampled coffee and chocolate pairings from Trailhead Coffee Roasters and Ranger Chocolate. Dapper & Wise served single origin Chemex brews and a tasty house made coffee soda, and we sampled house made Tangelwood Chai at Either/Or. Extracto Coffee Roasters explained their roasting philosophy over a multi-brew tasting, and Good Coffee served up delicious maple orange signature fall cortados. Heart Coffee took us on a full roastery tour, and Madrona Hill Café knocked it out of the park with a 3 pairing lineup of coffee, tea, and delicious house baked pastires. Oblique Coffee Roasters shared their building's unique history, and we met some of the awesome local kids that p:ear provides great opportunities for through coffee and other creative outlets. We savored Dutch flavors with Stroopwafels and Roseline Coffee at Prince Coffee, and enjoyed Beaumont blend and Nicaraguan single origin aeropress brews at Ristretto Roasters. Sister's Coffee set up an in-depth tasting experience for us, and we licked our spoons clean after a famous affogato at Spella Caffe. A unique tea tasting was a refreshing change of pace at Townshend's Tea, and a lovely Pinot Noir Barrel Aged El Salvadorian coffee brewed via Chemex at Water Avenue Coffee was also delightful. We couldn't have gotten around all weekend without our snazzy Zipcars, and were thrilled to send two lucky winners home with free 6 month subscriptions to Boxo Coffee. A shoutout to Wholesome!, Yelp Portland, Urnex, Ally Coffee, and all our fantastic Crawlers - thanks for a fantastic weekend exploring Portland's beverage culture!
