After a weekend of coffee, culture and cocktails in Houston, we're celebrating National Margarita Day with insights from one of KC's best bartenders and a Houston hotspot. Margarita Q & A with Ça Va Kansas City's Caitlin Corcoran Q. What song or album would you prefer making a big batch of margaritas to? A. Ice Cube - Today Was a Good Day, Lauryn Hill - Doo-Wop, Justin Timberlake - Suit & Tie, Beyonce - Drunk in Love Q. What's the oddest ingredient that you've used in a margarita, but it worked? A. Avacado - my bartenders hated me - they had to muddle it, then dry shake, then wet shake, then double strain. Q. In your opinion, the margarita is abused in mainstream cocktail knowledge by... A. Using Miso Tequila! Plus being overly sweet and using shitty pasteurized lime juice. If a bar isn't wanting to use fresh, they should use acid powders (read Liquid Intelligence by Dave Arnold). Margaritas in Houston At recommendation from the locals, we spent our last evening in H-Town at El Tiempo Cantina for fajitas, queso, and of course, margaritas. Going with two different "reposado" tequilas from Don Julio and Herradura made for interesting comparisons, and we came away full of tex-mex goodness with a bit of tequila trivia: Reposado: A type of tequila that has been aged in oak for a period of two to twelve months.
