~ Boulder, CO - wander down Pearl Street's West End and into Piece, Love & Chocolate for a ceremonial marriage of liquor, chocolate and love in bite size portions. ~ If you haven't caught on by now, I'm a shameless chocoholic - add whiskey & wine, and I'm yours. Piece, Love & Chocolate in Boulder has held me in a confectionary love affair since I first set foot under the tiki umbrellas and cocao pods hanging from the ceiling last year, and the aromatics alone are enough to keep me coming back for more. If you haven't been, it's entirely worth the road trip (wherever you live), and on my latest visit I secured a small collection of their booziest truffles to whet your appetite. All made with local Colorado whiskey, wine or beer, they'll give you a bite sized taste of mountain life in all it's chocolatey glory. 1. Port & Fig A staff favorite (and that's been tested on three separate occasions) - gold filigree sets an elegant tone for your taste buds as chocolate ganache made with figs and infused with Boulder Creek Zinfandel Port convinces you that figs are your new favorite fruit. 2. Dancing Pines Chai Pearl Just over the proverbial hill in Loveland, Dancing Pines Distillery crafts a 5-spice chai blend that results in the remarkable liqueur inspiration for this delicacy. A thin white chocolate coating lines the truffle, encasing a creamy white ganache center with a lovely blend of spices and warming liqueur. 3. Decadent Saint Mulled Wine After my exploration into home made mulled wine last week, this was an obvious choice, and it was a good one. Boulder local What We Love Winery's mulled wine offers mulling spices and faint hints of orange, and the experience is reminiscent of Valentine's day in a cozy mountain cabin. Cheers to that! 4. Boulder Beer Milkshake Porter This one speaks for itself - a thin layer of white chocolate inside surrounds a creamy "milkshake" center of white chocolate ganache and Boulder Beer Shake Chocolate Porter, which tastes exactly like it sounds - heavenly. 5. Fireside Whiskey Caramel This one is not for the faint of heart (or maybe it's just what you need). Like drinking whiskey from a chocolate shot glass, the liquid caramel center delivers on it's name with a pleasant whiskey burn muted by caramel sweetness and smooth milk chocolate. Made with Mile High Spirit's Fireside Colorado Bourbon Whiskey, it's a whiskey lover's dream. This list hardly scratches the surface, and you should probably just scrap any other weekend plans and head for the hills (more specifically, the hill at the end of Pearl St. in Boulder). Truffles filled with local liquor is just the beginning - house made cakes and pastries, decadent drinking chocolate, and a vast selection of chocolate in most forms you could conceive of - general confectionary bliss awaits you.
