~ It was a caffeinated week for the team with family time over beers and wind down time over wine. ~ 1. Various stops at some KC's best coffee spots seeking out the perfect pourover this week including: Parisi Cafe (Leawood); One More Cup; Broadway Cafe; The Roasterie; Crow's Coffee & Kaldi's on the Plaza - Michael 2. Cabernet Sauvignon from Santa Julia Winery in Argentina paired nicely with a new pasta sauce recipe, & we drank more than made it into the sauce. - Sadie 3. Soaked in that KC weekend sun with my brother and father at KC Bier Company. I was really impressed with their dry cider. - Jason 4. Mmm, chocolate. After a successful second shift behind the bar at Harbinger, I pulled up a stool and indulged in a luscious Nuance Chocolate hot chocolate. - Sadie 5. Trying new beverages from far away places is always an intriguing opportunity! When we were offered an Israeli Bordeaux blend from a highly-rated winery we jumped at the chance to sip, swirl, sample and speak about it with friends! Wine is 50% flavor/taste and 50% environment in which you drink it (IMHO). For us: it's best with family, friends, good food or on it's own based on the body of the wine! The 2009 Galil Mountain (Upper Galilee) Yiron Blend was a good option! Nearly six years of resting had softened up this once tannin-laced combo of Cabernet, Merlot & Syrah (2 of the traditional Bordeaux varietals + a lesser known grape used way back when in the mix). It was enjoyed with small plates and family while watching a movie (A Saturday special if you will). Dark fruit and spices permeate the flavors with a balanced acidity and streak of soft whit peppery prickle on the finish! The fruit is solid but not too forward and it finished off a cheese platter perfectly! For us: this is how you enjoy a good wine or even a great wine! - Michael 6. Late night study/work session meant a pot of house coffee and home made chocolate chip cookies with friends at Everyday Joe's. - Sadie 7. On my Ethiopian coffee kick again and had a terrific latte at Second Best Coffee using a single origin by Counter Culture. - Jason 8. Had some inspiring work meetings at One More Cup and Thou Mayest over some awesome pourovers last week. - Jason 9. Experimentation with "grown up sodas" by way of San Pellegrino and tartaric, malic & citric acid was an excellent exercise in flavor differentiation at Harbinger. - Sadie 10. One of my best beverage experiences for the week had nothing to do with drinking, but rather picking up two bottles of the new Boulevard Chocolate Ale for my wife to give to friends. Love seeing people not in the industry get excited by craft beverages. - Jason ~ Join the Conversation ~
